Northern Taiga, Gobi Desert & Central Mongolia Journey
This immersive journey reveals Mongolia through its most contrasting and authentic regions, offering travelers a rare chance to experience the country far beyond typical tourist routes.
Beginning in Northern Mongolia at Lake Khovsgol, the journey explores pristine alpine landscapes, sacred waters, and deep-rooted nomadic traditions. Traveling onward into the remote Mountain Taiga, guests encounter the Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders, one of the last remaining nomadic reindeer cultures on Earth, accessible only by horseback.
The route then unfolds southward into the dramatic Gobi Desert, where lush ice-filled canyons, towering sand dunes, ancient fossil sites, and Buddhist ruins illustrate Mongolia's striking natural diversity. Continuing through Central Mongolia, travelers explore Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, and conclude the journey in Hustai National Park, home to the world's only truly wild horse.
Participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable with active travel. Key requirements include:
Upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your local guide and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, enjoy an evening walk around Sukhbaatar Square, followed by a welcome dinner and a traditional Mongolian cultural performance.
Full-day city tour: Gandan Monastery and the Migjid Janraisig Statue, National History Museum, Bogd Khan's Winter Palace Museum, and Zaisan Memorial for panoramic views of the city.
Morning flight to Murun. En route, stop at the Uushig Deer Stone Complex — a Bronze Age archaeological site. Arrive at Lake Khovsgol in the late afternoon and settle into a lakeside ger camp. Often called the "Blue Pearl of Mongolia," the lake contains approximately 0.4% of the world's surface freshwater.
Hike Mount Hirvesteg for sweeping views across the lake and surrounding taiga. The remainder of the day is free to enjoy gentle walks along the lakeshore or simply experience the quiet and spiritual atmosphere of this sacred place.
Drive north through increasingly rugged terrain toward Tsagaan Nuur village, near the Russian border. Upon arrival, check into a local guesthouse and prepare for the upcoming horseback expedition into the taiga.
Leave vehicles behind and journey on horseback into the East Taiga. Spend 2 full days living alongside the Tsaatan (Dukha) community — reindeer herding, riding, milking, and gathering firewood. Learn about their spiritual beliefs and the unique relationship between people and reindeer.
Horseback journey back through the taiga to Tsagaan Nuur. The return route offers time for reflection on the rare experiences of the past days.
Drive back to Murun town. The day provides an opportunity to rest and recover following the physically demanding taiga journey.
Flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Free time to rest, shop, or explore the city independently before the southern leg of the journey.
Morning flight to Dalanzadgad. Drive to Yol Valley — a dramatic gorge where ice remains year-round despite the surrounding desert climate. Hike through the valley while learning about its unique wildlife and ecology.
Explore the spectacular Khongor Sand Dunes — Mongolia's largest, stretching over 100 kilometers and rising up to 300 meters. Visit a local camel herder family, experience camel riding, and listen for the natural humming sound of the "singing sands" at sunrise and sunset.
Visit the Havtsgait Petroglyphs, one of the most important prehistoric rock art sites in the Gobi. Continue to the legendary Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag) where the world's first dinosaur eggs were scientifically documented. Remain at sunset when the cliffs glow deep orange and red.
Drive northward to the ruins of Ongi Monastery — once one of the largest Buddhist centers in southern Mongolia with over 1,000 monks. Walk through the remaining temple foundations while learning about the impact of religious suppression during the socialist era.
Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia's oldest surviving Buddhist monastery, built from stones of ancient Karakorum and enclosed by a wall of 108 white stupas. Continue to the Karakorum Museum displaying artifacts from the ancient city.
Travel to Hustai National Park — home to the Przewalski's horse (Takhi), the world's only truly wild horse. Observe Takhi herds in their natural habitat along with red deer, marmots, and gazelles.
Drive back to Ulaanbaatar. Free morning for personal exploration. Visit the Gobi Cashmere factory store. Farewell dinner at a selected local restaurant.
Transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your departure flight.
