The Mongolian Gobi Desert is one of Asia's most diverse landscapes, rich in wildlife, color, and contrast. In some areas, rugged rocky mountains rise unexpectedly from the plains. Elsewhere, deep blue mountain ranges frame immense golden sand dunes. Lush oases, reed-lined streams, and wide-open steppes create a constantly changing landscape.
During this journey, you will stay in traditional ger camps, offering uninterrupted 360-degree views of the surrounding steppe. Nights in the Gobi are exceptionally quiet, illuminated by brilliant stars, while dramatic sunrises and sunsets paint the desert sky each day.
The Gobi offers a wide range of experiences: hiking through Yol Valley, climbing the towering Khongor Sand Dunes, exploring the fossil-rich Flaming Cliffs, riding Bactrian camels, visiting nomadic families, and discovering ancient monasteries.
Upon arrival, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy a half-day city tour visiting the National History Museum, Sukhbaatar Square, and Zaisan Memorial Hill for panoramic city views.
Drive south into the Gobi Desert to reach Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa). These towering white and pastel-colored cliffs were formed by wind and water erosion over millions of years. At sunrise and sunset, the cliffs glow in shades of gold, pink, and orange.
Drive to Yol Valley (Yolyn Am) in Gurvansaikhan National Park. Carved by an ancient river, the valley features steep rock walls and a unique microclimate where ice can remain until late summer. Gentle hiking opportunities and chances to observe wildlife including ibex and bearded vultures.
Continue deeper into the Gobi to the Khongor Sand Dunes, the largest in Mongolia. Rising dramatically from the desert floor, they form an ever-changing landscape. Camel riding available at the green oasis at their base. Hear the dunes 'sing' when the wind blows.
Visit Havtsgait Bronze Age petroglyphs carved over 5,000 years ago. Then continue to Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag) where the world's first dinosaur eggs were discovered. As the sun sets, the cliffs glow in deep orange and red tones.
Drive north toward Ongi Monastery, once one of Mongolia's largest Buddhist centers with 17 temples and over 1,000 monks before its destruction in the 1930s. Walk through the ruins and reflect on cultural loss and revival.
Continue north to Karakorum, the former capital of the Mongol Empire. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia's oldest surviving Buddhist monastery, built from the ruins of the ancient capital and enclosed by 108 white stupas.
Drive to Hustai National Park, home to the Przewalski's horse (Takhi), the world's only truly wild horse. Explore the park while observing wildlife in its natural habitat.
Return to Ulaanbaatar. Visit Gandan Monastery and observe the morning chanting ceremony. Shopping time including a visit to the Gobi Cashmere store. Traditional cultural performance in the afternoon. Farewell dinner.
